Assignment: The Figure and Light -Modeling and Value

Drawing 2/ Life Drawing de Beaufort

The Figure and Light: Modeling and Value

Assignment:
Create 2 sketches of our life drawing model demonstrating a preliminary understanding value, modeling, and light logic.

1.Coat your paper with the charcoal powder to “tone” the surface.
2. Using the Paper Mate Penraser, create a “bubble” and within this space begin to sketch the figure and important figural angles, guidelines/plumblines and center line.
3. Once you have established key points, begin to fill in structural lines with vine charcoal, followed by charcoal pencil.
4. Subtract value with the chamois to indicate volume and space. Model the figure according to Light Logic, indicating highlight, crest shadow, and reflected light where appropriate.

Student Learning Objectives:
1. Demonstrate comfort and fluidity working with vine charcoal, char-kole, penraser, chamois and charcoal pencil.
2. Demonstrate a working method that progresses from “general” to “specific” including key lines and angles.
3. Demonstrate improvement from first to second day of work.
4. Demonstrate basic understanding of light logic, and the relationship between value and an illusionistic modeling of mass.

Grading:
Using the four drawings made on the first day of class I will look for specific improvements on the second day, or at least efforts to address problem areas.
